What’s stopping you from making or updating your will?

There are many reasons, spoken and unspoken.

Here are some of the most common in both categories.

The fear that a surviving partner will remarry, or live with someone else and disinherit your children.

One of your adult children is more needy, financially or otherwise than your other children. The cause could be due to illness, mental incapacity or addiction. You feel guilty about the possibility of that child getting all or most of your estate at the expense of their siblings.

One of your children’s marriages or relationships is rocky. Divorce or separation is a very real prospect. You don’t want their partner to get half of your child’s assets which may include your inheritance gift.

You don’t trust that your hard earned estate will be used wisely by the beneficiary. They’re not good with money, it may be squandered. Your grandchildren may enjoy little benefit.

None of the above need be insurmountable obstacles.

The vital thing is to have a plan and a will that delivers your wishes as equitably and tax efficiently as possible.
